The challenge

Gas flow across more than one annulus.

An operator contracted BioSqueeze to eliminate annular gas on the 4½-inch by 6⅝-inch annulus of a storage well being prepared for abandonment. Cement-bond logging showed sporadic intervals with little or no cement coverage.

After a cut was made in the 4½-inch casing at 490 feet, bubbling shifted from the annulus to the wellbore, confirming connection to the gas channel. During the initial BioSqueeze treatment, bubbling was also observed on the outer 6⅝-inch by 10¾-inch annulus, revealing a second connected integrity problem.

Diagnose, access and progressively seal.

Prepare the pathway

The initial channel was cleaned with acid and neutralized before biomineralization treatment.

Treat the first annulus

BioSqueeze was injected through the casing cut at 490 feet to seal flow on the 4½-inch by 6⅝-inch annulus.

Access the outer annulus

Deep-penetrating perforations were placed at 370–373 feet through both casing strings.

Seal the second pathway

A second staged BioSqueeze treatment addressed the 6⅝-inch by 10¾-inch annulus.

The result

Two for two.

Both annuli sealed. SCP eliminated. Well approved for P&A.
