The challenge

A plugged well was still leaking.

Gas reaching surface after plugging indicates that one or more connected pathways remain open around or through the existing abandonment barriers. Reworking these wells can become expensive when the pathway is small, remote from the wellbore or distributed through damaged cement.

BioSqueeze was selected to access the active pathway with low-viscosity treatment fluids and form a mineral seal in place without relying on bulk cement placement alone.

Use the active leak

The same connected pathway carrying gas provides access for water-like treatment fluids.

Self-divert

Treatment preferentially enters the most conductive channel and moves outward as permeability falls.

Form mineral in place

Calcium carbonate precipitates within the leakage network rather than bridging at its entrance.

Restore the barrier

The objective is a permanent gas-tight mineral seal that complements the existing plug system.

Abandonment integrity depends on sealing the pathway.

An existing plug can be present while a separate connected leakage pathway remains open.

This case illustrates a recurring asset-retirement problem: a barrier may remain incomplete even after conventional plugging material has been placed.
