What a Failed Test Actually Means
A failed test may originate in corrosion, a pinhole, a thread failure, a worn packer or another mechanical defect. The pressure response identifies that the system cannot hold; it does not automatically identify the precise pathway or the best repair method.
That makes diagnostics essential. Repair design should distinguish a discrete casing leak from annular migration, confirm the interval that must be treated and define the acceptance test that will verify success.
Conventional Repair Tradeoffs
Patches and liners can restore mechanical integrity but reduce internal diameter and leave hardware in the well. Cement is effective when it can be placed across an open annulus, but its particles cannot reliably enter the fine crack, pinhole or corrosion pathway that produced the failure. Resins can reach smaller features, but shrinkage and debonding may allow pathways to persist.
The appropriate choice depends on where the defect sits, whether cement is present in the annulus, the drift the operator must retain and the expected life of the repair.
