Surface casing vent flow (SCVF), the uncontrolled migration of liquid and gas upward through leakage pathways in the annulus, has become a major issue in Canada. While operators are taking action to intervene and prevent the escape of greenhouse gases like methane, the cards are stacked against them....

With $1.15 billion in federal funding on its way, states are gearing up to make the most of their money and expanding their orphan well programs to properly deal with the scale of this problem. While some states have established orphan well programs that plug hundreds of wells per year, others have been grossly underfunded for decades....

With 3 million abandoned wells across the United States (2 million are still unplugged, according to the EPA), some states are creating programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Capping abandoned wells, which emit millions of metric tons of methane, can cut these emissions by 99%. But federal funding is critical to addressing the issue....

BSI was contracted to assist with gas migration on a re-entry in Wyoming. Existing cement plugs prevented access for a perf and squeeze without drillout, prompting the operator to explore alternative remediation techniques. BSI utilized DPAS to push fluids directly into leakage pathways in the annulus from surface....

BSI was contracted to mitigate annular gas on a well in Pennsylvania leaking from the 8-5/8” x 5-1/2” annulus. The well was prepared by cutting two narrow 360 degree sand notches at around 1,400’ through the 5-1/2” casing, installing 2-3/8” tubing to the depth of the bottom notch, and setting a bridge plug just below the bottom notch....

BSI was contracted to eliminate annular pressure on a well in Pennsylvania where previous remediation had failed. A 0 psi log showed no bond above 2,200’, while a 2,500 psi log indicated better bonding around 2,100’ due to prior treatment with a casing expansion tool....

BioSqueeze Inc. was contracted by an operator in Colorado to eliminate bradenhead pressure in a well slated for abandonment. Prior to our arrival, the well was prepared by perforating at 2,880 ft (gas source), 2,270 ft (channeling), and 870 ft (50 ft below surface casing shoe) through the 4-1/2 in casing string....
